5:00 am
i have to ask you to continue to do that. our number one priority is with these neighborhoods in watertown and making them safe and finding this individual. that's what we're committed to. we need more time. we're making significant progress up there. it may take hours to do this. please bear with us. i know there are a lot of questions and we'll have plenty of time to address those after this. for right now, this is about public safety. this is about watertown neighborhoods. please give us that leeway. we'll be back shortly. thank you. >> a news conference held by officials who are involved in this investigation and ensuring the public safety. we heard from massachusetts governor deval patrick and the extraordinary gravity of this situation really is upon us as the entire city of boston, residents there, told to shelter in place and not leave their homes as investigators try to get control of this situation. i want to go back to pete williams who has been doing some great reporting for us this morning. pete, as we consider the public
5:01 am
safety issue now present in boston, this isn't just a matter of getting hands on this suspect, but needless to say he's extraordinarily dangerous and we've had reports through the night that during that chase with police, both of these suspects were allegedly hurling explosives at police. >> yes. it is interesting. i can't think of a time when a major community like this was basically under lockdown. even when you have a killer on the loose or someone who escapes from prison or gets out of police custody, an active shooter. to lockdown an entire city is really extraordinary. it tells you the seriousness with which they are taking this. now, we know that they had a good deal of explosives in the car that they carjacked. that suggests that they were carrying quite a few explosives when they just grabbed somebody else's car. they hadn't loaded up a car with explosives first. they had them on their person.
5:02 am
perhaps they are acting on the supposition that if the brother when he got out of the car in watertown and confronted police was wearing explosives strapped on his body. perhaps they are working on the supposition that the brother who is still at large might have done the same. or might have pocketed hand grenades or whatever else. and might have a number of explosives on him. that's the best explanation i can think of for why they are imposing such remarkable level of security in that area as they continue to try to find him. it's really amazing. >> pete, we'll ask you to stand by. i want to turn to don, former fbi agent involved in the joint terrorism task force. we really don't have complete information here and we are not in a position to speculate about motive. i'll say one thing, if pete's reporting is correct and these brothers have been residing in the united states in this area
5:03 am
for up to ten years, these are two men who would have had significant ties to the community which i think speaks to the brazenness of this attack. >> absolutely. there's a lot of information that's going to unfold as time passes and we'll learn more about these guys. immediately the fbi is going to want to talk to the family members to try to figure out if anybody had any idea of what the motives could be. travel history could be really important. one of the things that we always look for for people that have been born here or lived here for a long time, have they traveled to get training or foreign direction and then come back. this will hopefully help us figure out if this has overseas direction or purely hatched in the minds of two these brothers. >> let's rejoin the press conference going on with state officials. let's take a listen. >> he's 33 years old. he's been a transit police
5:04 am
officer for three years. he's currently at the hospital. thank you. >> where was he shot? >> i believe that was an officer who was giving the identity. we joined it in progress. it sounded like it could be one of the officers involved in this shootout. we'll get that. we'll nail that down for you. let's turn again to don. this is just one of those situations where as i said before, i think we don't know what the motive could be. we know that these are two men who were born overseas. we don't know what their ideology is. we don't know what motivated this attack. this is a wide open investigation at this point. >> we don't know that. one thing we do know, they're extremely dangerous. in my fbi days we had a terms for these. tier 1 terrorists. most dangerous. we have a real life bomb checker on the loose and it's extremely
5:05 am
volatile situation. time will tell what the motive is. right now the most important thing is to figure out where this person is and get that immediate danger under control. >> good to have your expertise this morning. a reminder that the city of boston in near paralysis this morning as officials are telling residents there to stay in their homes. some of you will now return to local programming. for others, we'll have more of this special edition of "today."
5:06 am
the fbi just released a new photo of the suspect they are still looking for. this is taken by surveillance cameras at the 711. pete williams says these suspects are brothers from russia and may have military experience. they also say the two have been in the country for as long as a year.
5:07 am
to give you some perspective, watertown is a suburb of boston, about 8 1/2 miles from the site of the bombings and about six miles from the m.i.t. campus. our terry mcqueensweeney is liv watertown where the house is surrounded. what is the scene and the mood right now? >> reporter: for hours, we have had the city of watertown on lockdown. i have seen s.w.a.t. team members going door to door bringing people out as best as they can. an extraordinary announcement that the city of boston is on lockdown, with more than 600,000 additional people now on lockdown. it is more of a request lockdown. they are asking people to stay inside their homes.
5:08 am
they do not know where suspect number two as he has been identified, the one with the white cap backwards. no idea where he is. they hope he is in watertown. they believe he is in watertown. i have never seen so many police officers in one town in one area in my life. the entire town locked down. >> obviously, we are having some problems with terry's audio. he is live in watertown, massachusetts. that entire city on lockdown as is brand new information coming into the newsroom. the city of boston, sheltered in place. more than a quarter million people asked to stay in their home as police search for suspect number two. >> that's right. transit systems down. all schools are closed. we will continue to cover this breaking news all morning long. right now, we know you have plans of your own today. want to get a check of the local forecast with meteorologist, christina loren.
5:09 am
good news, we don't have a lot to worry about when it comes to your forecast. temperatures in the 40s and 50s. no wind happening at the coast. winds have relaxed, mostly in the 5-10-mile-per-hour range. high pressure will bring about a significant warmup. in the 90s as of next week. as of today, warm afternoon. unseasonably mild. make sure you are ready for that. 82, livermore, 76, fremont. 70 in san francisco. we will have your seven-day outlook. we do have a pretty smooth flow here through fremont. the construction south of mission boulevard. we will take a look at the maps. here we have 880 on our maps. 680 shows slowing. light volume of traffic may be a couple of slow-moving vehicles. construction that you head south on 880, it looks like they are about to pick up. we don't have any major slowing yet. a smooth drive through the south bay as well as we take a look over here toward the castro
5:10 am
valley "y." a crash on cherry. it is a surface street, pretty big one. it is not affecting 238 or 580. castro valley "y" always a suspect when we hear about anything. >> 5:12, our coverage of the breaking news in watertown continues next. one suspect from the boston bombings is dead. a second 19-year-old suspect is still on the run. police have closed off a 20-block radius in the area. they believe him to be hiding in. we will be right back.
5:11 am
5:12 am
one of the suspects in the boston marathon has been killed. the other is on the run. >> this is a fluid, active situation in watertown, eight miles from boston. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live in the newsroom. he is monitoring the updates
5:13 am
coming in all morning long. what's the very latest? good morning. if you are waking up just now and you weren't paying attention to what happened overnight, this did develop overnight. it happened ruffle six hours after the fbi released the surveillance images of these two suspects. the one with the black cap is tamerlan tsarnaev. he was the one killed by police in a shootout in the town of watertown. this is a suburb of boston. he also died not only of gunshot wounds but apparently of blast wounds. he was wearing some sort of explosive device around his trunk. we heard from the hospital in that area. it was not only gunshot wounds that killed him but he had thermal burns and shrapnel indicating that the bomb went off. the other person the police are looking for, the one that is wearing the white cap, his younger brother, a 19-year-old
5:14 am
man named dzhokhar tsarnaev. we heard from our reporter, terry mcsweeney who is saying the police presence is overwhelming, because they are so concerned about how dangerous they consider him. we heard an nbc terrorist consultant refer to him as a tier one terrorist. that being the worst kind of terrorist, referring to him as a bomb-chucker. one of these men were seen lighting and throwing a bomb at police last night during the shootout. there are apparently bombs that have not been detonated that are littering one of the streets in watertown. there are concerns that he is armed with a gun and has bombs. not only have they asked people to shelter in place in watertown, cambridge, other surrounding neighborhoods. they have asked them to shelter in the city of boston themselves. this is the warning just issued moments ago by the governor of massachusetts. it is a serious situation. we are asking the public to take
5:15 am
it seriously as well. with this law enforcement by following those simple instructions. we've got every asset that we can possibly muster on the ground right now. they are doing a terrific job and working in concert with each other. we are going to need the public to help us help them stay safe. >> as i mentioned, this shootout took place rufftook place rough the fbi released the photos of those two men. there was a carjacking and police were on their trail shortly there after. to wrap it up, the one brother, the older one, he is dead. that suspect has been shot and killed by police as the younger brother, the 19-year-old is still at-large and police are very concerned about how armed and dangerous he is. that's why you have this shelter in place, which is effectively
5:16 am
shutting down the boston metropolitan area. the transit areas in the agency are shut down. reporting live, bob redell, nbc bay area news. we want to tell you our own terry mcqueeny is in watertown and we expect a live report from him in a moment. i want to check in with scott mcgrew this morning. throughout all this, it is so interesting how many people have been following twitter and on the internet. they really have the lead on all this. people gathering their information, scott. good morning to you. we have to be a bit cautious about the internet. we have learned this from the internet. they are capable of making a lot of mistakes, as is the mainstream media. cnn "new york post" will never be thought of in the same way, twitter making its own mistakes, naming a young student as one of the possible suspects early. he was not. i put together a couple of sources on the internet that have been dependable for us, tune in radio.

5:18 am
a bullet hole as they fired bullets and had a shootout. these are hard to follow and you don't know what is what but the list i gave you and which i will give to you again later we think is dependable. we continue to monitor all of this. as bob said, he will have updates as well. we will continue throughout the day the second we know something. laura? >> maybe you can tweet that out as well. it is really interesting. people are gathering so much information. >> meanwhile, we are looking at the forecast here in the bay area. meteorologist, christina loren, has it. >> it is looking pretty good, pretty simple. this is what we want, 5:21. let's start with your current temperatures. it is pretty cool. we will be posting for you throughout the day. nbc bay area.com. if there are any big breaks, we will go back to network. we are all over this this morning. 53, oakland, 49, san francisco.

we continue to follow breaking development out of massachusetts. more details coming up after this.
5:22 am
5:23 am
welcome back. 5:25. recap our breaking news. the boston marathon bombing suspects. one is dead. the second suspect is still at-large. >> an all-out manhunt is going on. out this hour in watertown, massachusetts. it is about eight miles from boston. police say the suspect, pictured in a white hat on the day of the marathon is the man they are still looking for. he has been identified as 19-year-old dzhokhar tsarnaev. he was spotted at a 7-eleven wearing a gray hoodie. this man is believed to be armed and very dangerous. a look at what happened at 10:30 last night.
5:24 am
a 7-eleven was robbed and an officer shot on the m.i.t. campus and died. a car jack of a mercedes suv was reported as well in cambridge. police spotted that suv in watertown leading to a pursuit and the shootout. investigators say one of the suspects was shot and killed. the other managed to escape. the other suspect is identified as 26-year-old tamerlan tsarnaev. suspect number two, as we had mentioned, 19-year-old dzhokhar tsarnaev. the mother of the 11-year-old boy wounded in the boston marathon says he has taken a huge step forward. that news comes as aaron hern, received a special visit at the hospital from first lady, michelle obama. here is the proof. the hern family released this.
5:25 am
she brought replicas of bo. the family says he has had all tubes removed and is able to sit up and talk. he was at the finish line waiting for his mother, who was running the marathon, when the bombs went off. we're going to have a lot more coming up this morning. we are continuing to follow the breaking news out of boston this morning. they are really beefing up security there. more ahead.
5:26 am
5:27 am
breaking news. the city on edge after a search for the men responsible for the boston bombings. one has been shot and the other is on the run. i'm laura garcia cannon. this is a story that's been changing all night long. at 10:30 last night, a 7-eleven in cambridge was robbed, an officer shot and killed on the m.i.t. campus.
5:28 am
a carjacking of a mercedes suv was reported as well in cambridge. police spotted that suv in watertown leading to a chase and a shootout. during the shootout, the man believed to be suspect number one with the black cap was shot and killed. one officer shot. he was injured. the suspect, number two, the one with the white cap, was able to get away and is still on the loose. the fbi just released a new photo of the suspect they are looking for. it was taken by surveillance cameras at the 7-eleven. pete williams says the suspects are brothers from russia and may have military experience. the one killed by police in a shootout has been identified as 26-year-old tamerlan tsarnaev. the one on the run has been identified as 19-year-old dzhokhar tsarnaev. they have been in the country for at least ten years. watertown is a suburb of boston, about 8 1/2 miles from
5:29 am
the site of the bombings at copley square in boston and about six miles from the m.i.t. campus. "today in the bay's" terry mcsweeney is live in watertown. he joins us live. we spoke to you at the top of the show. what is the scene like right now. >> reporter: the scene right now is police presence everywhere in watertown where police believe they still may have the suspect -- i wouldn't say trapped. somewhere in this town. is a large town. for hours, 300,000 people have been ordered to shelter in place. a short time ago in a shocking announcement, boston police chief, ed davis and massachusetts governor, duvall patrick, announced they are putting the city of boston on a shelter in place notice. they want people to stay inside. there is the possibility that this suspect, suspect number two, the one you see in the pictures with the white cap backwards may have eluded this
5:30 am
dragnet somehow and may be heading to boston. they don't know. they are making sure that anybody who could be in harm's way is aware of it and told to shelter in place. i have had a long time of discovering events. emergency vehicles, you have the state police here. fbi. police were all over the area, not just boston, watertown, all kind of communities. they continue to pour into watertown where investigators believe they have suspect number two somewhere in this town. the concern is that during the chase last night, there were explosives thrown out of the vehicle. the suspect, number one, may have had explosives strapped to him. pete williams was saying a short time ago, the concern is that suspect number two on the loose may have explosives strapped to
5:31 am
him. they say they came to this city to kill. suspect number two may not be done trying to do just that and may have explosives strapped to him. that is why this extraordinary order to shelter in place somewhere around 900,000 people. 625,000 in boston and the 300,000 that were sheltered in place earlier. that order has been put into effect. it is an incredible scene out here. there is a media from all over the world is here at this corner. we are surrounded by police. police are everywhere out here. as i stand here, i see a large vehicle, lights on, sirens have been going by me all morning long. the state police making sure that nobody goes any further than where we are right here on the edge of watertown.
5:32 am
>> you painted a really good picture that you are there with tons of other media surrounded by police. you are in watertown. that place is in lockdown, shelter in place there. how do you feel about your own safety being out there as a reporter on the street and talking about how absolutely dangerous this particular person is? >> reporter: well, it is hard to put myself into the mind of someone who would do what this person did last night, suspected of killing monday during the boston marathon. it did cross my mind if he is looking for the most spectacular way to end things, if he tried to get closer to the world media, that would be one thought. that's total speculation on my part. as i'm standing here, i hear the siren. the police car goes by me there.
5:33 am
i feel very, very, safe because of the incredible police presence here. i have never, ever seen this many police officers in one place at one time. >> you take care out there. of course, we'll be checking in with you throughout this show. >> terry joining us by phone. we want to take you live to watertown where nbc's chris pollone joins us. the police just shutdown that entire city. >> reporter: i'm in boston on the boston common about eight miles from watertown just off to my west a little bit. we're right in the center of where everything is shut down. now, this is the boston common. it is by definition the gathering place of the city of boston. has been for 400 years now. right now, there is not a soul on the boston common. usually, you would see joggers, people walking their dogs. a lot of activity. it is absolutely desolate,
5:34 am
almost like a sunday morning in the city of boston. police have stopped taxi cabs from picking up fairs. there is no public transportation in eastern massachusetts at all, what we call the "t" hoor ere in boston shout down. the governor is asking people in the city of boston to shelter in place, stay in their homes, lock their doors, don't answer their doors for anyone because of the manhunt going on over in watertown. police believe the last remaining suspect, the 19-year-old, the person you saw in those fbi videos pictured with the white hat on, they believe he is willing to do absolutely anything not to be taken alive in by police and that he is willing to kill anyone or harm anyone that might get in his way to do that. police say there are several crime scenes all around the boston area, places with are there are possibly unexploded explosive devices.
5:35 am
they just haven't been able to process those because of the manhunt going on. i can't think of a time in my life when this has happened in another major american city. it is certainly eery to see this going on where an entire city and suburbs are shut down in search for one person. >> before you go, you are in boston. we are getting reports that the suspect could be surrounded in watertown. do you know anything about that? >> reporter: there have been reports off and on all morning. they thought they had him cornered at one point in a commercial building. at this point, it is just going to be speculation on my part of whether he is cornered or not. they thought they had him earlier this morning. that apparently turned out not to be true because the manhunt continued for quite a bit of time. we have to check with our sources and see what the latest is on that. we'll have to keep checking back on you.
5:36 am
thank you very much. chris pollone, live in boston. >> one of the two suspects in the boston marathon bombing is dead. a massive marathon hunt is on for the other two suspects. they did release the driver of that car. he was not hurt. they are also suspected of killing an officer at the m.i.t. campus. right now, we know the two suspects are brothers. the one that is still on the run is being identified as 19-year-old dzhokhar tsarnaev. the other is 26-year-old tamerlan tsarnaev. they had a backpack believed to be carrying the explosives from the boston marathon. the older brother, seen there, is dead. the man seen wearing the white hat, identified as dzhokhar
5:37 am
tsarnaev, he is still on the run. they came here to the united states in 2002, 2003 with their families. >> they could have heavily armed and strapped with bombs. let's check in with meteorologist, christina loren. >> a lot of people trying to get to work and get out of town. i want to point out, we don't have any flight delays out of san francisco. you will find some heading into the northeast for today. we have a potent weather system headed that way. delays above one hour. keep that in mind. a pretty good-looking day. your hour by hour detail, 40s and 50s to start. temperatures climbing in the 60s and 70s. we will round out the day warm. 70, san francisco. 83 today in fairfield. as we head through the next
5:38 am
seven days, temperatures stay nice and warm. above average all the way through the extended period. let's take a look at your drive with mike. >> we will take you out to san jose. the volume is starting to pick up over the last eight to ten minutes here. northbound 110 underneath 680. we will show you you the maps for the area. you do see the yellow now. underneath where it says san jose as speeds start to come down into the 50s. on average, 50 miles per hour. shifting as far as the volume on 101. heading southbound toward 105. no crashes reported there. north 85 with the arrow. that's what we are talking about, close to blossom hill road. a single car crash there. no major injuries. there is a distraction. the car facing the wrong way. that is a little jarring as you come out of frethe freeway. backup starting to form in these
5:39 am
cash lanes. that's pretty traditional. we'll track it over at 5:41 on friday. back to you. we will have the latest on the manhunt for the remaining boston marathon bombing suspects. more right after this break.

5:41 am
welcome back. breaking news out of massachusetts. watertown in lockdown. boston, a shelter in place there as well. terry mcqueeny, live in watertown monitoring the very latest developments. >> reporter: the latest we have, pete williams, nbc news reporting, that investigative police believe they know where suspect number two, the suspect, is located. they say it is here in watertown. i am standing as close as anybody is allowed to get to watertown. i'm looking up at a helicopter circling an area not terribly far from where we are standing. circling the area over
5:42 am
watertown. the faa has declared the area over watertown a no-fly zone mink that that helicopter is a police helicopter. again, investigators think that they know where this second suspect is. that would be a major development here. obviously, for the people of boston, a short time ago. police chief of boston, ed davis, came out here along with governor duvall patrick, aannounce t announce the city of boston is on a shelter in place order. for hours now, including the entire city of watertown. the latest we have out here, pete williams, nbc news. haes be he has been right on this one all along. the investigators believe they know where suspect number two is hold up here in watertown.
5:43 am
police helicopter flying over the city. now, it is just frozen in the air. it is stationary i would guess maybe a mile from where i'm standing here with all the gathered media from around the world. police keeping us in this spot. no one being allowed to go into watertown. the entire mass transit system in boston is shout down. they did not want suspect number two to escape. suspect number one was shot and killed overnight. there is a report that he had explosives strapped to him. they had certainly thrown explosives at officers as they chased that mercedes suv that they had car jacked. the concern is that suspect number two may have explosives strapped to him, sefrcertainly available to him. knowing where he is is one thing. figuring out how to get him out without someone else in the
5:44 am
neighborhood or area being injured or killed would be another. police are here. the helicopter i was talking about, the police helicopter, is now circling back, coming back over towards us. we will keep you posted from watertown as this amazing and stunning story continues to develop. >> we will check back with you very soon. be safe out there. as the manhunt continues this morning for the remaining boston marathon bombing suspect more than 3,000 miles away, people are getting ready to show their support for the victims of that terror attack right here. >> reporter: good morning. when something like this happens, people want to help. they want to do something. in less than two hours, hundreds of runners are going to gather here at the fairy building in san francisco. word about this run is being spread through social media.
5:45 am
they have a facebook page up. san francisco will run for boston. that's what it is called, to show support and solidarity for all the runners wounded at the boston marathon bombings this week. the san francisco marathon team is running in honor of athletes in that prestigious boston race. a loop of just over four miles. this is also being spread on twitter with the #runforboston. they ran for the three bombing victims who died last night, three miles in silence. today's run was supposed to start at sue beerman park but the outpouring was so great, they moved the start over to the fairy building athe 7:00 this morning. if facebook is any indication, so far, 524 people have rsvp'd, we are coming. we are going to take part.
5:46 am
they have asked to wear yellow and blue, the colors of the boston marathon. >> very nice tribute. in the meantime, we are looking at the forecast here in the bay area. meteorologist, christina loren. it is a nice one? it is a nice one. we still have to get to work. a live picture. a pretty day as the new day begins here in san jose. 5:48. temperatures are chilly. grab your coat. high pressure is going to bring about a significant warmup later today. 42, gilroy, 48, livermore. this big ridge moves in today. it is going to drive the winds offshore. that means great beach weather if you want to spend time with your kids or stay inside. pretty nice, not too hot. next week, really warm readings come into the mix. winds have dropped off. they were calm yesterday. let's talk about what we can expect as we head throughout the
5:47 am
day today. as we get into this weekend, temperatures will stay nice and mild. here is a look at your drive with mike inouye. >> let's take a look at the maps right away. let's get you locateded on the hayward side of the san mateo bridge. we are talking about mission boulevard. first note, castro valley yfr"y and 880. a deadly crash on a major surface street, mission boulevard near 14th. a couple of blocks south of medford are closed right now. a big deal if folks are headed up toward the freeway. foothill getting over there. we are going to have our chopper get over there and see how much activity is going on. it is a deadly crash on the city streets south of 238 as you are coming off of the castro valley yfrmth "y." we continue to track that. meanwhile, the rest of the roadways, the freeways, are
5:48 am
moving pretty smoothly around the bay. it is a friday. we have a later bill for 580 westbound. no crashes. a little slowing. also, down through livermore. a little slowing there as well. pretty typical for this time. starting to build the volume coming out of the north bay and into the east bay. much farther north, west 80. your commute. we have a sig alert. there is a truck and a car that got into a crash. they are stuck in lanes for the time being. we see the backup forming in these cash lanes. still, no metering lights. back to you. we continue to monitor t breaking news coming out of boston. we will have the very latest on the search for the remaining boston marathon bombing suspect. more right after this break.

5:51 am
